Title: Cultural Connotations of Politeness and A Comparative Study of the Chinese and Western Conversational Structures
Abstract: Politeness, as a symbol of human civilization, is a universal phenomenon of the human society. However, different cultures have different criteria and ways of expression concerning politeness, thus rendering this word different connotations. Politeness itself can be a very important part in successful human intercommunication, and its expression in language appeals to linguists all the time. There are many differences between the Chinese culture and the western culture as represented by that of the Britain and America. The aim of this paper is to make a comparative study of the differences in conversational structures in the two languages by analyzing the different connotations of the word politeness in the two cultures.
