Title: An analysis of size effect of the inclination angle of shear band and the onset, skip and stability of shear strain localization
Abstract: The focus of the paper is to in vestigate how the inclination angle of the shear band is dependent on the height of rock specimen and the instability of shear band.Based upon the gradient-dependent plasticity,a model of size effect of the inclination angle of the shear band was put forward. The theoretical result compares well with experimental results. The larger the height of the specimen, the larger the inclination angle of the shear band is.With the increment of the height, the velocity of increment becomes slow and gradually achieves a stable value.A theoretical analysis of the onset, skip and stability of shear strain localization was done;the phenomenon of the skip of shear strain localization was explained.Compared with the coal specimen, the reasons for lag of strain localization of sandstone specimen were explained and the reason is also given of the fact that the local strain of the sandy rock specimen lags behind the coal specimen.Whether the skip occurs or not,the flex point is a key factor in softening stage of complete stress-strain curve. If the curve has no flex point, then the skip of shear strain localization can not occur.Shear strain localization is the reasons for size effect of the inclination angle of shear band on the condition of uniaxial compression of quasibrittle materials.
