Title: Distin’s Critical Reassessment of Meme Theory
Abstract: Dawkins has suggested that cultural elements, say, language, concept, belief and human behavior, evolve in just the same way as genes do in biological evolution. Their main difference is, according to Dawkins, the former evolves by non-genetic means while the latter genetic. In her book The Selfish Meme, Kate Distin questioned Dawkins’s remarks that cultural evolution and biological evolution adopt exactly the same way. She insists that memetical evolution is based on intentional, conscious and responsible behaviors of free agents in this world, instead of the natural selection principle of biological evolution.
