Early in ancient times, there were many primitive ethnic groups living across South China. Interactivity and acculturation among the ethnic groups were frequent. Up to the Qing Dynasty, these ethnic groups became fixed at three levels. Ethnic groups in South China included the minorities as well as the Han. Identification of each ethnic group was gradually conducted according to ethnic origin identification and language identification.
