Title: The Divergence and Polemics of Foot Binding's Influence on the Prosperity of the Country Among Intellectuals in the Late Qing Dynasty
Abstract: The concept that foot binding influences the prosperity of a country is the ideological basis of the Anti-Foot Binding Movement in modern China. But in the Late Qing Dynasty, there was a huge divergence of opinions on the concept among Chinese intellectuals. This concept, initiated by missionaries, rarely attracted Chinese intellectuals' attention before 1894 while foreign missionaries and their followers were having a polemic on the concept. After 1894,the concept gradually became widespread and aroused disputes among Chinese intellectuals, especially in southern China where Anti-Foot Binding Movement was actively carried out.The concept and some other similar concepts became so prevailing during the Political Reform in the Late Qing Dynasty that both officials and folks had changed their previous opinion that foot binding was a trifle and accepted the idea that foot binding hindered the prosperity of China. But some polemics on the issue still existed and gradually proliferated from southern China to northern China and became a national controversy.
