As...A statistical analysis is conducted on English and Chinese visual metaphoric expressions to test the hypothesis of cognitive universals underlying conventional metaphors based on bodily experience. As the research reveals, there are indeed systematic correspondences between the two languages. In both languages, there are a significant proportion of intellectual, emotional, attitudinal and other abstract concepts expressed in terms of vision. About 81% visual metaphoric expressions in English find their wellmatched correspondences in Chinese. It may be concluded that the conventional metaphors of intellect, emotion, attitude, etc. in terms of vision are a universal linguistic phenomenon, which can find its roots in the human tendency of metaphoric thinking based on bodily experience.Read More
