Title: Video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery in the elderly for spontaneous pneumothorax
Abstract: Objective To evaluate the outcomes of spontaneous pneumothrax treated by video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery(VATS)in the elderly. Methods A total of 103 patients were performed VATS.Ninety-seven cases underwent standard procedures of VATS,and 6 were added a micro-incision. Results The operation time was 25 to 170 minutes, with an average of 50 minutes. The mean postoperative hospital stay was 17 days, and there was no report of operative death.Pneumothorax disappeared and lung well re-expanded among all the patients.Fourteen patients experienced such complications as prolonged air leak,re-expansion pulmonary edema and arrhythmia, and were all cured and discharged. Conclusion VATS is feasible and safe in elder patients with spontaneous pneumothrax with less invasion and complications.
