Title: Effective of Acarbose in Treating Patients with Type 2 Diabetes:Comparison between Men and Women
Abstract: Objective To explore the effectiveness of acarbose in treating male or female patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus(T2DM).Methods A total of 48 newly confirmed T2DM patients were divided into male group(n=27) and female group(n=21).Both groups were treated with acarbose.Their body mass index(BMI),weight-height ratio(WHR),blood pressure, blood lipid,HbA1c,and FBG as well as blood glucose and insulin levels 30,120 and 180 minutes after meals were determined or calculated before treatment and 3 and 6 months after treatment. Results The decrease amplitude of HbA1c in male patients was significantly larger in females than in males after 3 and 6 months treatment(P0.05).Blood glucose showed no significant difference at different time points(P0.05),and the amplitude of decrease three months after treatment was also not significantly different from that after six months. The insulin levels in both male and female groups obviously decreased at after treatment, but the difference in the amplitude of decrease was not significant(P0.05).Conclusion Acarbose can effectively reduce the fasting and post-prandial blood glucose and HbA1c levels and improve insulin resistance. The decrease amplitude of HbA1c is is much large in men.
