Title: The value of exposure recurrent laryngeal nerve in thyroidectomy
Abstract: Objective To study the value of exposure recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN) in the prevention of neural injury in thyroid surgery. Methods The data of 597 cases with exposure RLN and nonexposure RLN in thyroidectomy from January 1998 to November 2008 were analyzed retrospectively. Results There were 597 cases of thyroidectomy operated. In RLN exposure group (299 cases),there were 391 exposed RLNs,1 nonrecurrent laryngeal nerve(NRLN),3 injuried RLNs. The injury rate of RLN was 0.77%. In RLN non-exposure group (298 cases) ,there were 19 injuried RLNs,3 permanent palsy recurrent laryngeal nerves, the injury rate of RLN was 6.4%.The difference between the two groups were statistically significant(P0.05).Conclusion The injury of nerve can be reduced with exposal RLN during the thyroid surgery.
