Title: Influence of pioglitazone and Metformin on visfatin in adipo-patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus.
Abstract: Objective To observe the effects of pioglitazone or metformin on visfatin in adipo-patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. Methods This 12-week study included 60 type 2 diabetic adipo-patients on stable regime of exercise and food controlling for ≥3 month. All the patients were randomized into two groups. The subjects in piolitazone group received piolitazone 30 mg once daily. The subjects in metformin group received metformin 500 mg twice daily. Each subject was followed up for 12 weeks. Results After treatment with pioglitazon, the level of fasting plasma visfatin, insulin resistance and the triglyceride were decreased(P0.01,0.05,0.05),and the level of Homa–β was increased(P0.05).While the levels of visfatin and triglyceride in the metformin group were not significantly changed.Meanwhile,in pioglitazon group, the levels of visfatin, insulin resistance and riglyceride were decreased obviously, and the function of β-cell was somewhat improved(P0.05,0.01,0.05).But the body mass index in metformin group was decreased significantly than that of pioglitazone group(P0.05). Conclusion Both the pioglitazone and metformin can reduce the levels of fasting plasma glucose and glycosylated hemoglobin.Besides pioglitazone can also down-regulate the level of blood visfatin revealling that pioglitazone has anti-inflammatory effects and can interfere the development of type 2 diabetes mellitus.
