Title: POLYSTYRENE/MONTMORILLONITE NANOCOMPOSITE PREPARED VIA ONE POT EMULSION POLYMERIZATION METHOD
Abstract: Polystyrene/montmorillonite (PS/MMT) nanocomposites were prepared via one pot emulsion polymerization method. In this method, emulsifing agent and styrene were added into organic montmorillonite (O-MMT) suspension directly. The problem that organic montmorillonite is hard to disperse into emulsion polymerization system in traditional methods had been solved. The results of X-ray diffraction (XRD) show that the PS macromolecules had intercalated MMT via this method successfully and obtained perfect effects (the d__(001) layer space4 nm). Fourier Transform Infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy analysis indicates that PS macromolecules had intercalated the lamella layers of MMT. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) shows that the glass transition temperature (T_g) of PS is enhanced from (99.7) ℃ to (107.1) ℃ after intercalating MMT. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) indicates the thermal stability of PS is improved after intercalation. Further more, the mechanism of intercalation via one pot emulsion polymerization method was proposed by analysising XRD spectra systemically.
