Title: PNEUMATIC LITHOTRIPSY FOR THE TREATMENT URETERAL CALCULI APPLIED THROUGH URETEROSCOPE(REPORT OF 180 CASES)
Abstract: ObjectiveTo present the results achieved in the treatment of ureteral calculi by rigid ureteroscopy with a pneumatic lithotripter. MethodsFrom May 2000 to January 2004, 180 patients (127 male, 53 female, age range 14~65 years, mean age 38 years ) with ureteral calculi underwent pneumatic lithotripsy by rigid ureteroscopy in our hospital. The calculi were in the distal(n=98, 54 %), mid (n=64, 35 %) and proximal part (n=18, 10 %) of the ureter. The mean stone size was 7.5 mm (range 5-23 mm). ResultsOf the 180 patients whose stones could be accessed adequately by ureteroscopy with pneumatic lithotripsy, overall stone-free rate was 98.3 %(177 cases) and 165( 90.6 %) cases were stone free immediately after the procedure, and another 12( 6 %) cases had residual fragments 1 mm that passed spontaneously. Only in 3 cases, the stons could not be removed because of the movement of the stones. The main complication was haematuria 67( 37 %) cases. No ureteral perforation and infection was found. ConclusionIn our view, pneumatic lithotripsy by rigid transurethral ureteroscopy is an useful, safe and efficient technique in the treatment of calculi in the mid and distal ureter.
