Title: Radiation breeding technique and its applications in vegetable breeding in China
Abstract: Radiation breeding technique usually makes use of γ-ray, laser,ion beam and space to radiate plant.Radiation breeding technique can shorten breeding cycle,break the linkage of disadvantageous characters and improve the rate of mutation.It has become one of important ways for modern crop breeding.So far,radiation breeding technique has been applied in many vegetables such as cucumber,watermelon,melon,capsicum,eggplant and onion,resulting in many accomplishments.The conception,main types and characters,the choice of mutation material,the choice and identification of mutations of radiation breeding and their applications to vegetables were summarized in this paper.The mechanism of radiation,genetic characteristics of mutation,and the control of genes of mutant character,etc.should be studied further,and the radiation breeding should be combined with chemical mutation,DNA molecular genetic markers in order to breed more vegetable varieties.
