Title: Estrogen inhibits osteoclast function by modulating the cell factors produced by bone marrow-derived osteoblasts
Abstract: Objective To study the mechanism of inhibitory effect of estrogen on osteoclasts through the cell factors produced by osteoblasts. Methods The levels of IL 1,IL 6,and TNF α were assessed by immunoassays in mouse marrow derived osteoblast cultures. Results In the cultures, the production of IL 1,IL 6,but not of TNF α,was reduced by 0 1 nM estrogen, compared with the controls. Conclusion Estrogen is able to modulate the production of several factors by osteoblasts, indicating that estrogen can exert its negative regulation on osteoclast via paracrine mediator(s) produced by osteoblasts.
