Abstract: Remote sensing is a process to acquire, prepare, and decipher information of spectral and spatio-temporal nature on objects, phenomenon or areas under investigation without being in direct physical contact. In Earth Sciences, the earth surface or the atmosphere is observed from outside of space using satellites (space borne) or from the air using aircrafts (airborne). The purpose and types of remote sensing data gathering system are explained. The data on major remote sensing satellite systems, their year of launch, and their resolutions are described. Digital Image processing and its application to geological remote sensing is explained. The diverse fields of applications in earth science are discussed. The recognition of large linear features, lithological alteration associated with mineral deposits using various bands with examples are described. Remote sensed data is the useful base for GIS and facilitate visual image interpretation. Differences of remote sensing and aerial photos, multispectral imaging and sonar are discussed. The present trends and the outlook of remote sensing industry are briefed.
