Title: Endotoxin Activity of Secondary Effluent and Influence of UV Disinfection on It
Abstract: Endotoxins are components in cell walls of Gram-negative bacteria, and are considered as risk factors for wastewater reuse because of their inflammatory capacity. The chromogenic Limulus amebocyte lysate(LAL) endpoint assay kits were used to analyze the endotoxin activity of secondary effluent from WWTP,and the influence of UV disinfection on endotoxin activity in secondary effluent and E.coli was investigated. The results show that endotoxin activity of about 103 EU/mL can be detected in secondary effluent.Free endotoxin activity is 52% to 92% of total endotoxin activity in secondary effluent, indicating that free endotoxins are main forms of endotoxins in secondary effluent.Furthermore, endotoxin activity in secondary effluent and E.coli does not change significantly after UV disinfection, suggesting that UV disinfection of below 150 mJ/cm2 can not remove endotoxins effectively.
