Abstract:Generative linguistics claims that grammar is generative,that surface structure is generated from several underlying levels via certain rules,and that grammar is of multiple-strata.In contrast,cogniti...Generative linguistics claims that grammar is generative,that surface structure is generated from several underlying levels via certain rules,and that grammar is of multiple-strata.In contrast,cognitive linguistics argues that grammatical structure is by nature symbolic,and it is integration of basic or smaller units,and that grammar is of mono-stratum.By appealing to the evidence of cognitive psychology and synchronic and diachronic characteristics of grammar,the present analysis demonstrates that the cognitive view is justifiable whereas the generative view is not.Research in this line has both theoretical and practical implications.Read More
