Title: Beijing School and Classicism in Modern Chinese Literature: Compared with Western Classicism
Abstract: The classical styles, modes and conventions which appeared in European literary history nearly 350 years ago, had analogical expressions in modern Chinese literature: the writers belonging to Beijing School were the main group who practised classical principles and methods in China. So I think that it's not appropriate to classify the Beijing School as a Chinese romanticist group. The emergence of the Beijing School were not only due to the influence and enlightenment of western classicism, but also to the evolution of modern Chinese literature. Both in theory and in practice, the Beijing School was revering rationality, venerating traditional works and complying with the humanity: these characteristics are analogical with those of European classicism, though the Chinese classicism emerged in a different national culture and in a different period.
