Title: Different cover cultivation models of sugarcane-potato interplanting
Abstract: [Objective]This research aimed to study the influences of different cover cultivation models on sugarcane-potato interplanting and its effect on growth and yield of sugarcane and potato in order to provide references for designating the perfect sugarcane-potato intercropping model suitable for planting on latosolic red earth areas in Guangxi. [Method]A field experiment was conducted in Long’an County, Guangxi; five treatments, viz. conventional cultivation, cover with thin soil and leaves (TSL), cover with thick leaves (CTL), cover with thin soil and white mulch (TSM), and no interplanting (CK), had been designed to research the growth and yield of potato and sugarcane in different cover cultivation models.[Result]The results showed that the potato and sugarcane yield of all sugarcane-potato intercropping models with coverage were increased significantly compared to the conventional cultivation model (CK) in the given conditions. Compared to those of the CK, the potato yields of TSM, TSL, and CTL increased by 25.39, 19.95, and 13.51%, respectively; amongst the listed categories, TSM treatment had the highest yield and the best benefits. Sugarcane yield and quality were not affected by the interplanting model with different covers on the latosolic red earth of Guangxi. On the other hand, the potato grown from intercropping with sugarcane helped to resolve the limited planting areas between sugarcane and grain, which increased the unit area yield of sugarcane and improved farmers’ income. [Conclusion]Sugarcane yield and quality were not affected by intercropping with potato on latosolic red earth areas in Guangxi; the sugarcane interplanting potato model with thin soil and added cover resulted with the highest potato yield and the best benefits.
