Title: Effects of Seed Coating on Seed Moisture Content and Seed Vigor During Storage in Foxtail Millet
Abstract: Adopting a system of seed processing equipment, the effe ct s of seed coating on seed moisture content, germination rate and vigor during sto rage in foxtail millet were studied. The results showed that: ⑴ Seed coating wa s a better way for keeping higher seed vigor during storage than one without coa ting. The seeds treated with the 1∶70 ratio between coating agents and s eed could be stored safely until the second planting season. ⑵ It was importan t to reduce coated seeds moisture for keep higher seed vigor during storage. Th e coated seeds with the moisture content below 12% had higher germination rate a fter storing 16 months. ⑶ Suitable ratios between coating agent and seed, sprea ding time and thickness in the air were major factors for reducing seed moisture content and keeping seed vigor during storage. The moisture content of seeds a fter coating could be reduced to blow 13% through spreading coated seeds on the ground in the sun for 0.5~1 h by thin, and 2h by thick layer. The moisture content of coated seeds without spreading in the sun could be reduc ed to below 13% when seed treated with1∶70 ratio between coating agent a nd seed and opening in the air for 1~4 h.(4)The arising of germination perce ntage happened to the coated seeds at each planting season during storage, especi ally for the seeds with lower moisture content.
