There are two kin...The explanatory notes made by Xu Shen on the basis of the sound of a character in his Shuo Wen Jie Zi are valuable materials in the study of Chinese etymology and Chinese lexicology. There are two kinds of semantic relations between interpretted words and interpretting words. One is that the two words are of the same origin, the other is that they are from different origins. As to the second kind, it can be divided into three types: loans (17), variants (34), cultural meanings (44) and doubtful examples (58).
