Abstract: Deixis and anaphora are two important functions of deictic expressions. To distinguish between deixis and anaphora, three factors should be considered, namely, the immediate situation of speech, the deictic center and the antecedent. The use of deixis is restricted by the time and space of the utterance and other paralinguistic factors. However, the understanding of the so-called discourse deixis is only dependent on its linguistic context and has nothing to do with the time and space of the utterance and other paralinguistic factors. This leads to our doubt of the necessary existence of discourse deixis.
