Title: Comments on Saussure's Analogy of Chess Playing
Abstract: Language is a system of arbitrary vocal symbols used for human communication. Saussure compared the working of language to chess playing, which vividly described differences between the concepts of synchrony and diachrony in linguistics. Honestly, this analogy has something to recommend. Nevertheless, there do exist some details causing the analogy to break down. The paper attempts to demonstrate that the working of language and the chess playing are also quite different in their natures, rules and working process etc. Therefore they can't be mentioned in the same breath.
