Title: Experimental study on resistance to flow through submerged vegetation
Abstract: In vegetated rivers, aquatic plants change the resistance and decreasing flow speed,in most instances they enlarge water level and reduce flood discharge. However, they make positive contribution to river regulation, bank protection and water quality promotion. In order to find the impact on flow resistance by aquatic plants, flume experiments are made with submerged rigid plants in vary densities. The variation of water level along flow distance is observed, hydraulic gradient is calculated and the impact on roughness coefficient by varying of Reynolds number and plants density are analyzed based on the test data, also a logarithm relational expression of drag force and vegetated flow characteristic roughness is established. As a result, database of vegetated open channel flow observation are enriched.
