Title: SYNTHESIS AND CHARACTERIZATION OF DUMBBELL-SHAPED BIOMIMETIC SiC WHISKERS
Abstract: Dumbbell-shaped biomimetic silicon carbide whiskers were prepared by the method of solid Synthesis of SiO2 and C. The dumbbell-shaped whisker was composed of a rod (100nm~1um in diameter) and small beads (200urn~10um in diameter). The dumbbell-shaped whiskers have the similar morphology, but the shape and size of beads and distance between two beads are different for different whiskers. The main composition of beads analyzed by EDS is St and O with a small amount of Na and Al. and the main composition of rods is St, C respectively. The crystal of whiskers is identified as β-SiC by X ray diffraction method, and some small peaks of αa-SiC and SiO2 are also identified. There also existed an amorphous pattern. According to the results of EDS and XRD, it can be inferred that the rods are SiC whiskers and the beads on the rods are composed of SiOZ crystal and amorphous SiOx (1 x 2) with a small amount of soda-lime glass and alumo-silicate glass. The growth of dumbbell-shaped whiskers is gas--phase process.
