Title: A comparison of the ocular hypotensive efficacy of three prostaglandin analogs
Abstract: Objective To compare the ocular hypotensive efficacy of latanoprost, travoprost and bimatoprost. Methods Patients with primary open angle glaucoma(POAG) or ocular hypertension(OHT) were selected for the study.Fifty-one patients were treated once daily with latanoprost,24 patients were treated with travoprost and 27 patients were treated with bimatoprost for 4 weeks.Intraocular pressure(IOP) before and after the treatments was observed. Results The IOPs of all patients in the 3 groups had decreased markedly after 4 weeks. The daily average IOP(mean±standard deviation) at 8:30 in the latanoprost group decreased from(24.57±3.68)mmHg(1 mmHg=0.133 kPa) to (15.29±2.67)mmHg, and the maximum extent of the decrease was 37.8%;IOP in the travoprost group decreased from(24.54±2.95)mmHg to (16.29±3.11)mmHg,with a maximum decrease of 33.6%;and the reduction in the bimatoprost group was from(25.41±3.63)mmHg to(16.00±4.45)mmHg,with a maximum decrease of 37.0%.The effectiveness of the treatments did not differ significantly(F=0.579,P=0.562;F=0.868,P=0.423) when the three groups were compared. Conclusion This study demonstrated that latanoprost, travoprost and bimatoprost are all effective and lasting in reducing IOP in POAG and OHT.The 3 treatments do not differ significantly in their effectiveness.
