Title: Yangshi Lei Family and Imperial Gardens in Qing Dynasty
Abstract: The design of Chinese classical gardens climaxed in Qing Dynasty (1644-1911) with the construction of imperial gardens. Within this period Yangshi Lei family acted as the chief architects of the design studio and took charge of the imperial architecture design. Their works include many imperial gardens. In other words,from the middle of Kangxi Reign (1661-1722) when Lei Jinyu was appointed as the chief architect by Emperor Kangxi because of his very positive contributions to the construction of Changchunyuan to the end of Qing dynasty when Lei Xiancai took charge of the reconstruction of the Yuanmingyuan Garden,Yangshi Lei family put their effort into the construction of almost all the imperial gardens in Qing dynasty. Based on systematic classifying of Yangshi Lei's architectural archives and the case studies of their works,this paper briefly presents the stories of Lei family's main members of 7 generations about their practice of imperial gardens design,and reveals the important role they played in the construction.
