Title: Interaction Between the Transient Recovery Voltage and Post Arc Current in Vacuum Circuit Breaker
Abstract: For further understanding the current zero phenomenon in the interruption process of vacuum circuit breakers(VCB), through simulations, we investigated the interactions between transient recovery voltage(TRV) and post arc current when a VCB interrupts short circuit fault and capacitor bank, and established a model of post arc current by the theory of Langmuir probes in the software PSCAD/EMTDC, which was proved to be valid since the calculation results agreed well with experimental results. The calculation results show that when a VCB interrupts a short circuit fault, TRV is hardly affected whether post arc current is taken into consideration or not, yet post arc current is proportional to the rising rate of TRV. However, when a VCB interrupts a capacitor bank, the post arc current influences the initial TRV remarkably but has no influence on the power-frequency recovery voltage. Moreover, network parameters including type, position and phase angle of short circuiting, equivalent inductance, and capacitance also influences the TRV and post arc current obviously. The obtained results could help to analyze the capability challenge of a vacuum circuit breaker under different operating conditions.
