Title: Study on Enclosure Effect of Desertified Steppe in Xianghuang Banner Based on TM Image
Abstract: In this study, the enclosure project area in Xianghuang Banner of Inner Mongolia is selected as the study area, and the enclosure effect of the desertified steppe in the northern part of the banner is analyzed from 3 aspects including the vegetation, soil and wind-blown sand situation and 12 indexes based on the TM images in July 2000 and August 2007 and the ground survey data. The results show that the vegetation indexes, such as the vegetation coverage, biomass and height, are higher in the enclosure area than those in the grazing area. While regenerating the vegetation after implementing the project, the proportion of annual plants is decreased, the plant species are increased, and the wind-blown sand is controlled to some extent. The proportion of fixed-sand area is increased compared with that before implementing the enclosure project, and the proportion of mobile-sand area is reduced. Moreover, the physiochemical properties of soil are improved, such as the increase of soil organic matter content and silver sand proportion as well as the occurrence of soil crust.
