Title: Passivation of heavy metals in sewage sludge by attapulgite
Abstract: Heavy metals in sewage sludge are the major concern in sewage sludge use in agricultural practice. In this study, attapulgite,a clay known to be able to absorb heave metals, was added to sewage sludge at percentage of 6%,12% and 18%(on a dry weight basis),and was incubated for 30 d,to investigate its effect on heavy metals in sewage sludge. The results showed that attapulgite had passivation effect on Pb,Cd,Cu,Ni,Cr,and Zn in sewage sludge in the beginning of the experiment. After 30 d,passive Pb,Cd,Ni,Zn decreased or partially activated;on the contrary, passive Cu increased, while passive Cr remained stable during the incubation.
