Title: Clinical Observations on Acupuncture at Front-Mu Points for Preventing Constipation in Post-stroke Patients
Abstract: Objective To investigate the clinical efficacy of acupuncture at Front-Mu points in preventing post-stroke constipation. Methods Ninety stroke patients were randomly allocated to an electroacupuncture prevention group (briefly electroacupuncture group),a conventional acupuncture prevention group (briefly conventional acupuncture group) and a blank control group (briefly control group),30 cases each. All the three groups were given basic treatment. Meanwhile, the conventional acupuncture group received acupuncture at points Tianshu (ST 25) and Guanyuan (CV 4) and the electroacupuncture group, electroacupuncture in addition to what done in the conventional acupuncture group. Treatment was given 30 min once daily. The control group was not given other interventions. The incidence of constipation was examined in the three groups of patients after one course of treatment (10 days). The clinical preventing effects were evaluated in the three groups. Results The incidence of constipation was lower in the electroacupuncture group (16.7%) than in the conventional acupuncture group (46.7%). It was lower in the conventional acupuncture group than in the control group (76.7%). There was a statistically significant difference between the three groups (P0.05). Conclusion Acupuncture at Front-Mu points can effectively prevent constipation in post-stroke patients. The effect of adding electroacupuncture is superior to that of simple acupuncture.
