Title: Correlative Study on Cognitive Function and Daily Living Capacity in Elderly People
Abstract: Objective To explore the correlation between cognitive function and daily living capacity in the elderly people.Methods Data of the 1836 elderly residents in the city and countryside of Hunan Province were analzed by activity of daily living(ADL)scale and mini-mental state examination(MMSE).Results The mean score of MMSE was 22.49±6.33 and the abnormal accounted for 30.5%.The mean score of ADL was 16.75±4.87 and 43.2% of the subjects were observed with function decline.There was a negative correlation between cognitive function and daily living capacity and the related coefficient was-0.292(P0.01).Conclusion Although cognitive decline and decline rate are subject to individual age,gender,education and other aspects,there is a significant correlation between cognitive function and ADL capacity in the elderly people.The nursing staff should encourage elderly persons to engage in more beneficial activities and increase contact with the outside world through advocacy,education and other ways so as to maximize the ADL capacity and maintain good cognitive function.
