Title: A Prospect of Urban Transportation Development in China:Presented at the 13th ITS World Congress
Abstract: This paper presents some of the challenges faced in urban transportation development in China. Those challenges include a constant agglomeration of population in large cities, a rapid increase of motor vehicles, an extremly limited land resource, and a call for improving tranist-oriented transportation systems. In regards of the resource conditions and development requirements in China, the paper proposes a series of policy strategies for urban transportation development, such as setting up a high priority for building public transportation systems, constructing transit-oriented urban comprehensive transportation systems, strenthening the coordination and control function of urban transportation planning, and continuing the construction of urban transportation infrastructure, as well as urban Intelligent Transportation Systems(ITS). In addition, the papar foresees the urban transportation development situation within the next 10 years in China, noticing that significant progress will be made in ITS system construction and urban public transportation system development, which would turn urban transportation into an important driving force of economic development in China.
