Title: Ciliary neurotrophic factor in the regeneration of facial nerve
Abstract: OBJECTIVE To study the role of ciliary neurotrophic factor(CNTF) in the generation of facial nerve.METHODS Twenty adult New Zealand rabbits' bilateral super buccals of facial nerves were transected and connected with silicone tube.CNTF was injected into a random side of silicone tube and normal saline in the other. At four and eight weeks after the operation, both the CNTF group and the SAL group underwent electrophysiology test and histopathology as well as quantity analysis.RESULTS Four weeks later, both CNTF and SAL group failed in eliciting muscular excitement upon stimulation; T-test showed a signifi-cant difference(P0.05)in the average number of myelinated axons, the axon cross-sectional areas and the diameter of axons in the two groups.Eight weeks later, motor nerve conduction velocity of facial muscular excitement was 37.9±4.4m/s in the CNTF group and 30.5±4.6m/s in the SAL group. The average number of myelinated axons, axon cross-sectional areas and diameter of axons were 1914±475, 2.17±0.21, 3.12 ±0.51 in the CNTF group and 1197±403, 1.86±0.28, 2.79±0.62 in the control one,respectively.T-test showed a significant difference between the(mP 0.05).CONCLUSION CNTF enhances facial nerve re-generation in adult New Zealand rabbits.
