Title: Managed pressure drilling applied to horizontal wells targeting carbonate gas reservoirs in middle Tarim Basin
Abstract: Rich hydrocarbon resources were found in carbonate reservoirs in the middle Tarim Basin. To get quick breakthroughs in oil and gas exploration and development there, specific national scientific research and projects have been carried out.At this area, because of the complicated geologic conditions of carbonate reservoirs, many technical difficulties in drilling engineering need to be overcome, such as pressure sensitivity, frequent kicks and lost circulations, uneven distribution of H2S,fractures encountered during drilling, and the productivity per well to be improved. The solutions for these difficulties are discussed herein, and horizontal wells with special profiles are recommended to improve the production, and managed pressure drilling is recommended to reduce reservoir damage and ensure engineering safety. The combination of horizontal well and managed pressure drilling has been successfully applied to the well TZxx-xxH,with the completed horizontal section being 875 m long, which sets up a new record for drilling in the middle Tarim Basin.
