Title: A DISCUSSION ABOUT HOW TO TRANSLATE CULTURAL IMAGES BETWEEN CHINESE AND ENGLISH
Abstract: Cultural differences inevitably remain between English and Chinese which are characterized by cultural overlapping, cultural zero of equivalence and cultural conflict. ”Cultural translation” is essentially the translation of cultural images. This paper suggests that a translator should transplant cultural images by means of foreignization and domestication, which contribute much to enriching the target language and making it more lively and colorful. However, only on the principle of ”seeking common ground while reserving differences” can the two methods be employed effectively and enable the readers of a translated text to understand and appreciate it in the same manner as the original readers do the original text.
