Title: "Cheng X" and "Chen X":A Study on the Lexicalization of "Chengbian" and "Chenbian"
Abstract: Most of the prepositions in modern Chinese are the results of the grammaticalization of the verbs in ancient Chinese.Focus on oral expression and words with two syllables in Chinese has much influence on the process of the lexicalization of prepositions, however,Cheng and Chen have formed a unique integreted lexical model after a process of difference, similarity, substitute. The paper defined the prepositional nature and the usage patterns of the above two words through a synchronic study;Meanwhile,it deepened their degree of differentiation and proposed their lexicalization through a diachronic study. The study shows that Cheng and Chen can not create new patterns in modern Chinese any more, but only appear in fixed patterns.
