Title: Artistic Conception in Ancient Chinese Drama and Novel
Abstract: Artistic conception is a very important aesthetic category in classical Chinese poetry. Because the ancient Chinese dramatists and novelists were poets at the same time, they were inevitably influenced by the special way of thinking, which appears in the process of poetic creation. Therefore, their artistic creation had blended the pursuit of artistic conception in classical poetry. The classical Chinese drama and novel emphasized expressiveness and lyrical output. This is quite different from western literature, which emphasizes re-representation. If we use the typical theory to explain the classical Chinese drama and novel, it is far from enough. The category of artistic conception, which exists in the classical Chinese drama and novel, has striking Chinese characteristics. It is represented in three aspects: the blend of po- etry and picture, man and scene, form and spirit.
