Title: Effects of Fentanyl on EC_(50) of Ropivacaine for Labor Analgesia
Abstract: Objective To investigate the EC50 of ropivacaine for epidural labor analgesia and to determine the effect of fentanyl on 50% effective concentration(EC50) of ropivacaine. Methods 90 patients with singleton pregnancies were randomly divided into three groups: group A received ropivacaine; group B received ropivacaine combined fentanyl 1 microg/mL; group C received ropivacaine combined fentanyl 2 microg/mL. The concentration of ropivacaine was adjusted according to double-blinded up-down sequential allocation. The efficacy was assessed with visual analog scores(VAS) and EC50 calculated with method of Dixon. Results The EC50 of ropivacaine was 0.156% in group A,0.150% in group B and 0.114% in group C. The EC50 of ropivacaine was significantly lower in group C than in group A and B(P0.01). There were no significant differences between in group B and in group A(P0.05). Conclusion The EC50 of ropivacaine for epidural labor analgesia determined by up-down sequential allocation is 0.156%,which can be decreased by the use of fentanyl 2 microg/mL. We conclude that ropivacaine combined fentanyl 2 microg/mL may be more advantage for labor analgesia.
