Title: Confronting Society and Life: Different Interpretations of Zhuang Zi by Xiang Xiu and Ji Kang
Abstract: Xiang Xiu and Ji Kang interpreted Zhuang Zi differently. Xiang took a social approach, aiming to coordinate the intense contradictions between the individual and the society, and between nature and the Confucian ethical code, and seeking for a way of living for scholars who needed peace of mind out of the troubled world. Ji's interpretations were concerned with individual life, exploring the space of spiritual world and creating a life of freedom and a home of purity, and finally entering a world of complete freedom. Xiang's approach reflected the needs of the society while Ji's was the necessary result of individual consciousness being raised. Together they reflect the spirit of that particular historical period.
