Title: Study of the Effect of Acupuncture Pretreatment on Learning and Memory Abilities in Vascular Dementia Rats
Abstract: Objective To investigate the effects of electroacupuncture at Baihui(GV20),Shenshu(BL23) and Housanli(ST36) on learning and memory abilities in vascular dementia (VD) rats. Methods SD rats were randomly allocated to normal, sham operation, model and electroacupuncture pretreatment groups. A rat model of VD was made by a modified thread-occlusion method. The effects of electroacupuncture at Baihui(GV20),Shenshu(BL23) and Housanli(ST36) on Morris water maze learning and memorizing abilities were investigated in the VD rats. Results The average escape latent period in a water maze test lengthened in the model group of rats and had a statistically significant difference compared with the sham operation group (P 0.01). The average escape latent period shortened in the electroacupuncture pretreatment group of rats and had a statistically significant difference compared with the model group (P0.01). There was a statistically significant difference in the orientation navigation test achievement between the electroacupuncture pretreatment group and the model group (P0.01). Conclusion Electroacupuncture pretreatment can improve VD rat's learning and memory abilities.
