Title: The effect of vascular smooth muscle cells on the adhesion, proliferation and morphology of endothelial progenitor cells in a coculture system
Abstract: Objective: To explore the effect of vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs) on the adhesion, proliferation and differentiation of endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs). Methods: Human EPCs were separated from cord blood and identified by double staining with the fluorescent labeled ac-LDL and lectin. In a VSMC/EPC coculture system the adhesive ability of EPCs was examined by adhesion experiment and the number of clone forming units and the morphorlogy of EPCs were observed by a microscope. Results: When EPCs cocultured with VSMCs,the adhesion of EPCs was upregulated by 63 %,the number of elongated cells increased but the number of clone forming units decreased by 60 % about. Conclusions: The adhesion and differentiation of EPCs were induced but their proliferation was inhibited by VSMCs.
