Title: Clinical observation of brachytherapy in the treatment of bronchial lung cancer
Abstract: Objective:To evaluate the intraluminal brachytherapy combined with external radiation in the treatment of bronchial lung cancer. Methods:From March 1996 to October 2000,27 patients with major airway obstruction lung cancer were treated by combined intraluminal brachytherapy with external beam radiotherapy.Intraluminal brachytherapy was delivered using remote HDR afterloading branchytherapy with iridium-192.The catheters were inserted into bronchus by using a bronchoscope, the dose of the reference point at 10mm from the aplicater axis was 5~8Gy fraction per week over 1~3 weeks to a total dose of 10~24Gy.Results:all the symptom and bronchial obstruction improved about 70.07%,92.59%,100% at week 1,2 and 3 respectively after intraluminal brachytherapy. There were no serious complication during the treatment except that two patients occurred irritant cough. The 1,2,3 year survival rates were 25.92%(7/27),14.81%(4/27),11.11%(3/27) respectively. Conclusion:Intraluminal brachytherapy may result in symptomic improvement in the patients with major airway occlusion lung cancer. The intraluminal brachytherapy combined with external beam radiotherapy or chemotherapy is an effective method in treatment of lung cancer.
