Title: The relationships among prostate weight, serum prostate specific antigen concentration and free serum prostate specific antigen concentration percentage rate in men with BPH
Abstract: Purpose:To assess the relationship among prostate weight (PW),serum prostate specific antigen concentration (PSA) and free serum prostate specific antigen concentration percentage rate (fPSAR) in benign prostate hyperplasia (BPH).Methods:146 men with BPH were treated by open prostatectomy.PSA (in 146 cases) and fPSAR (in 51 cases) were measured.Patients with PSA greater than 10 μg/L accepted prostate biopsy before operation, after operation the prostate resection tissue were weighted and sliced for pathological examination to exclude prostate cancer. All statistical tests were twosided with an alpha of 0.05 and a p value of less than 0.05 accepted as significant. Results:PSA increased with PW,PSA of every group (25 g,25~50 g,51~75 g,75 g) were ( 4.13 ± 8.03 ) μg/L,( 5.01 ± 5.30 ) μg/L,( 11.60 ± 7.89 ) μg/L,( 11.60 ± 7.89 ) μg/L respectively,PW and serum PSA have a linear relationship (r= 0.26 ,P= 0.002 ),PW and FPSAR have not a relationship (r- 0.04 ,P= 0.77 ).Conclusions:PSA is a powerful predictor of prostate weight in BPH.
