Title: LOW-FREQUENCY VARIATIONS OF KUROSHIO HEAT TRANSPORT AT SOURCE AREA AND ITS IMPLICATIONS FOR SUMMER RAINFALL OVER CHINA
Abstract: Based on long-time temperature and salinity data from Japan Meteorological Agency, the Kuroshio heat transport(KHT) of the source area at a characteristic section(along 24°N) was estimated using traditional dynamical method, and its lower frequency variability was analyzed with the wavelet transform technique. Then, the implications of the preceding(autumn, winter and spring) and contemporary(summer) KHT anomaly in the source area of Kuroshio for summer rainfall anomaly over China were discussed. The results show that, the KHT of the source area presents notable quasi-2a and around 16a variations which was subject to temporal variety and seasonal discrepancy. There is a long-term linear increasing trend in the KHT for the past 50 years, while the long-term trends of the KHT in all of the four seasons are different from each other.Further analysis indicates that the implications of the preceding and contemporary KHT anomalies in the source area of Kuroshio vary for summer rainfall over the east of China, and the anomalously increasing of the KHT in summer—likely to induce high SST and further abnormal water vapor transport(i.e.southwest anomalous flow) over the north of South China Sea and its adjacent area—may be one of important factors to cause excessive summer rainfall in the mid-lower reaches of the Yangtze River.
