Abstract:Objective To investigate the effect and complications of proximal femoral nail anti-rotation(PFNA) in treating inter-trochanter fracture in elderly patient.Methods 128 patients were operated for inter...Objective To investigate the effect and complications of proximal femoral nail anti-rotation(PFNA) in treating inter-trochanter fracture in elderly patient.Methods 128 patients were operated for inter-trochanter fracture with PFNA from October 2005 to October 2008.114 cases were followed up.The operation time,time of PFNA implantion,blood lost during operation,drainage volume,complications,time for weight bearing,time of bone healing and function of hip were analyzed and compared.Results Eight cases were missed.6 patients died,the mortality rate was 5%(6/120).The healing time was 8 weeks on average.The outcome was excellent in 65 cases,good in 37 cases,poor in 12 cases,with the rate of effectiveness was up to 89.5%.The coax vara rate was 24% in 31-A2.3 fracture according to AO classification.Conclusions PFNA is effective for the treatment of unstable inter-trochanter fracture,especially in elderly patient.However,appropriate procedures are necessary to avoid coax vara.Read More
