Title: Place and Self : Children's Photographic Narratives
Abstract: This paper focus on how children communicate the connections between self and place through the use of photography. It has been argued that there are structural similarities between place and self, and that this is the reason for the intense relationships people develop with place. The paper explores why the nature of photography facilitates communication of the relationships between self and place. It draws on experiences of a project focusing on how children communicate place experience through different qualitative methods. It is showed that photography results in narratives regarding connections between self and place, and that it is the non-visual aspects of place that most clearly are communicated through the visual method of photography. The photographs are not reproductions of the visual impression of place, but rather virtual places which triggers memories and senses almost as effectively as 'real' place. It is the meeting between self and place, rather than the physical and visual aspects of place that is photographed. The camera functions as a mediator between place and self, and the diverse relations that exists between these two.
