Title: Age-related changes of the corneal endothelial cells in healthy subjects
Abstract: Objective To observe the changes of corneal endothelial cells in different age ranges. Methods 343 eyes of 180 healthy subjects aged from 6 to 94 years were evaluated using Topcon corneal specular microscope and the changes of cells density, averaged size, standard deviation, coefficient of variation and the proportion of hexagonal cells,as well as central corneal thickness and other parameters of corneal endothelial cells were analyzed in different age ranges. Results Mean ages of healthy subjects were (40.77±22.023) years old. The averaged corneal endothelial cell numbers were 128.08±17.24,averaged endothelial cell density was (2894.64±372.42)/mm2,and the proportion of hexagon cell was (55.40±7.90)%,which showed decreasing tendency with age, especially after 30 years old. The averaged cell area was (353.27±52.56)μm2,averaged coefficient variation was (36.25±6.74),and the standard deviation was 128.48±32.46 respectively, which showed increasing tendency with age. The averaged central corneal thickness was (0.55±0.03)mm,there is no significantly different among all groups. Conclusion The numbers, density and morphology of corneal endothelial cells are changing with age in various age-groups of healthy human.
