Title: Surgical treatment of Chiari malformation complicated by syringomyelia
Abstract: Objective To discuss the treatment of Chiari malformation complicated by syringomyelia.?Methods 41 cases of Chiari malformation were treated by varied procedures, i.e. posterior fossa decompression in 31 cases, and posterior fossa decompression by microsurgical technique plus repair of the dura in 10 cases.?Results In 28 of the 31 cases having undergone posterior fossa decompression, the clinical syndromes were ameliorated, but the syndromes got obviously ameliorated in all of the 10 cases treated by posterior fossa decompression and repair of the dura.?Conclusion Satisfactory results can be achieved by posterior fossa decompression for Chiari malformation complicated by syringomyelia. Posterior fossa decompression by microsurgical technique plus repair of the dura can improve the results and decrease the complications.
