Title: Fangwai Friendship and the Custom of Drinking Wine at Temples in the Yuan Dynasty
Abstract: Fangwai Freindship is the friendship among unreligious people and monarchal people. In the Yuan Dynasty, there are five reasons leading to prevailing on the custom of Fangwai Friendship: 1.the abolition of emperor examinations 2.the disappointment of scholars and bureaucrats in official career 3.the noncorporation of subjects in the South Song with Mongol-Yuan governors 4.some scholars' desire and infatuation towards religion 5.the tolerance policy of the governor in religion.Literature and journey become the major forms of Fangwai Friendship not only in individuals but also among groups. In Yuan Dynasty, many temples brew and sell wine. And some monasteries have competition in drinking wine and reciting poems. The quiet and leisure taken by the custom of Fangwai Friendship and drinking wine in temples add a florid flash to the multiple and compatible social culture in the Yuan Dynasty.
